Winzip is a zipping/unzipping utility. It creates an archve and then you put the files you want into it. It compacts them so that the file size is less than the overall total of the files, when they are unzipped. It's good for sending files over the internet cos it decreases file transfer time.

I have the registered version of Winzip v6.3 and this morning I got and evalutaion copy of v7.0 from a magazine. I installed it about an hour ago and I know as much as I am going to know about it by now. The functions are still the same, you can make zip files, add to zip file, edit zip files, delete from inside the zip file, open mime files and so on. The graphics for open, new, faourites, add, extract, view, checkout, and wizard have changed as they do in each version. They are now more 3D than ever before! Not that it makes much of a difference. The time it takes to load a zip file has dramatically decreased. I opened my zip file of my Real Audio Files and it was there in 2 seconds, not like before. You can still do all the old stuff, like make an exe file out of your archive, do a virus scan, and UUencode a file. I hardly ever use any of the options. I just make Zip files, compress them, compress them some more, and turn them into .exe files for quick and easy transfer over the Internet.

There isn't a lot that you can say about a program like WinZip, mainly because of how small the program actually is. The folder in Program Files is only 2.12 Mb in size. There are components installed in Windows but I doubt if these add to over a Mb of space. There are many Zipping/Unzipping packages around and the only way to know which one to get is to try them. I use winzip cos it's a windows application and I've used it for a long time, I've gotten used to it's interface. Other people who prefer dos programs, where it's quick and very simple, might prefer PKunzip. It's really up to you what you buy. Most of the programs have evaluation periods so you can try them for free.

This is all I can really say about WinZip. I could go into terrific detail about the options available, but to understand all the technical talk you'd have to know a lot about archives, in which case you'd have a favourite program to use. All I can now do is sit back and let you take control.
