If you thought 2D beat 'em ups were dead and buried, it's time to think again. This is the latest release from Capcom, the people who also make the Street Fighter games, and by the name of the title you will have probably worked out this game is called Pocket Fighter.

Pocket Fighter has a simplified version of the control system which Street Fighter used. The game is set in a more 'cartoony' world than Street Fighter. All the fighters look like cartoon characters set against a well animated background. The game itself is distinctive, detailed and fast with plenty of incidental animations, and there's a degree of interactivity - you can hit certain objects in order to grab a few extra gems. These gems are the most obvious addition to the game, called puzzle fighter style gems. If you collect one of these gem this will increase one of three colour-coded power bars, each representing a specific super attack. The means by which the players acquire these gems is satisfyingly predictable. And naturally, the harder you hit an opponent, the greater the yield of power-embulging goodies you can collect. There is also a new 'special' button which allows you to carry out a variety of bizarre power-up attacks.

A very simple game to play, via its use of only two punch and kick buttons, instead of previous games in the series' more complicated three button usage, but Pocket Fighter is also very hard to master. This game is more likely to appeal to younger Playstation owners that the older and wiser players addicted to the 3D Tekken series. It would be a good game to play a few times though, to five you a whole new gaming experience. A bit childish to really compete with any 3D beat 'em up games, but probably the best 2D beat 'em up available for the Playstation.
