ALBUM REVIEWED: Nevermind

ARTIST: Nirvana

PUBLISHED BY: David Geffen Company\Sup-Pop(1991)

12 tracks -- inc. Smells Like Teen Spirit (Q - Best Single of all time), Lithium, Come As You Are and In Bloom. Highest Position: 7.

Nirvana, the 3 piece grunge band from Seattle. Their music either rocked or shocked. Smells Like Teen Spirit enabled "underground" grunge bands to come out into the world. Their music created our Indie. Well, that's my opinion.

Kurt Cobain - the front man - was the man behind the songs. This was their breakthrough album, having released Bleach 2 years earlier, it didn't make the charts, and this album was to be their turning point.

  1. Smells Like Teen Spirit. The anthem of all time. Screaming. Distorted. Generally f*cked up. Riveting solo. A brilliant song. 10/10
  2. In Bloom. Nice and heavy. Laden voices. Groovy lyrics. 8/10
  3. Come As You Are. The well known riff and heart-tearing vocals contribute to make this song good. 8/10
  4. Breed. Fast, furious, screaming, wild, crazy, insane. "Even if you have, even if you nedd. I don't even care, we don't have to breed. We can plant a house, we can build a tree. I don't even care, we could have all three. She said!" 9/10
  5. Lithium. Mellow. Then crash-bang -yeah-yeah-yeah! 9/10
  6. Polly. Written about a rape. Very slow and quiet with just one accoustic guitar, a cymbal and a bass. Gentle but harsh words, softly spoken. 9/10
  7. Territorial Pissings. Fast, furious, screaming, wild, crazy, insane! "Never met a wiseman, if so it's a woman." 8/10
  8. Drain You. A bit mellower but with still heavy guitars. Very nice. And suggestive. 9/10
  9. Lounge Act. Good enough song. Not really a great song. But it does the job. 8/10
  10. Stay Away. Kurt screams. "Stay Away! Stay Away!" What's he trying to say? Brilliant. 9/10
  11. On A Plain. Melodical and much more tuneful to the untrained non-nirvana-fan ear. 8/10
  12. Something In The Way. Written by Kurt about his period of homelessness where he slept under a bridge. This song is slow moving. Similar to Polly, but much slower. 8/10
