ALBUM REVIEWED: Garage Inc.
ARTIST: Metallica
PUBLISHED BY: Polygram\Vertigo(1998)
2 CDs. 37 tracks -- inc. Whiskey In The Jar, and Crash Course In Brain Surgery.
This is the most recent in the long range of Metallica albums. But, this is a really disappointing effort. Disc 1 contains 11 tracks. "New recordings '98" is its title. New recordings in 1998 they may be, but new songs no. These are all covers. What?!? A Metallica Cover Album?!? Yup. And that's not the worst part. Disc 2 is titled "Garage Days Re-Revisited '87". Yup. More of the garage days stuff. It also inludes "Garage Days Revisited '84", "B-Sides & One-Offs '88-'91" and "Motorheadache '95".
The worst thing about the album, in my opinion, is the garage days section. This album is only for the dedicated fan because I can't be bothered with demos of Metallica f*cking things up in a garage. Not at all appealing. However, some of the covers were not that bad. Well, one of them wasn't bad. "Whiskey In The Jar" was a favourite of mine when Thin Lizzy did it in 1972. Metallica have added heavier guitars and harsh vocals, but the song is still the same. It is still just as good.
That is all I have to say about the album. Followed by this advice: "If you think Metallica are ok-ish, or you hate their guts - don't buy this album. If you think Metallica are Gods and would let a rabid doberman lick you all over just to meet them - then you might as well buy it. But don't say I never warned you."
Overall, my favourite track is Whiskey In The Jar.
