Sean O'Connor is the person behind many of the shareware games that work their way onto your PC (or Mac) through free CD-ROMs. Most of these games are puzzles, simulations and basically mental games. Not for the beat-em-ups fan. FIREFIGHT, although it sounds like a Fireman Sam action adventure, is actually set in World War II. You are the controller of either the Nazi troops, or the Allies' troops. Your troops are made up of 10 squads which can contain Tanks, Armoured Cars, Anti-tank guns, or infantry which carry a selection of different weapons. The infantry can be Riflemen, Mortars, Machine-gunners, grenades, and reconnaisance. You have to have at least one squad that is your HQ. It is through these guys that you control your squads.

The game is in the style of Command & Conquer and is in real time. You control your squads in a point, click, "kill that bastard" and "move yer arse over there" style. The difference between C&C and Firefight is that you can't move people independantly. The squad stays together. You can, however, determine how far they can spread out. You have mission objectives to achieve but they are in a more realistic manner. They basically are taking over sections of land and important buildings where the opposition are controlling something. You do have the chance to buy squads, but this is at the beginning of each level. You can't buy more people when some of your squad is killed. What you buy at the start is what you keep. This makes it harder than the C&C games.

On being attacked, you troops will return fire automatically and inform you of their situation. The realistic advantage of this (or disadvantage) is that there are trees, buildings, hills, bushes, ditches, hedges and so on that can get in their way, making it impossible to shoot the enemy. Unlike C&C, the terrain has diffeernet heights. If your troops are on the top of a hill, you will have the advantage over the oppostion for obvious reasons. (If you want to know find a site that teaches you the laws of physics, I'm just here to review the bloody game).

I found the game much more advanced than C&C cos it is much harder and more thought has gone into it to make it more realistic. For example, there is a bit of a time delay between the orders being sent and them being carried out. You HQ guys send the messages and, they are using 1940s equipment, so it's basically shite! That is how realistic it is. This explains the shite guns, tanks and other wierd stuff. This also gets you into the 'groove' of the game. You have to plan your actions very carefully. Remember, you canny buy any more troops in the game. Boy, I couold rant and rave about this for ages, but I'll choose not to. I'm not that sad, honest! (although Sandy might disagree!)
