Green Day. A three-piece punk\rock band from the US. With Billie Joe on guitar and vocals, Tre on drums and Mike on bass. The band write the music and Billie Joe writes the lyrics. This was the first album of theirs that I bought. The thrashing guitars, quiet vocals, and the obvious lyrics really appealed to me. The songs were really catchy and they left an impression on me. Without further ado, here's the track-by-track analysis.

  1. Burnout This starts of with a blasting guitar. The chorus is really catchy. "I'm not growing up, I'm just burning out. And I step in line to walk amongst the dead." 8/10
  2. Having A Blast The lyrics in this are great! "I'm taking all you down with me. Explosives duct taped to my spine, nothing's gonna change my mind. I won't listen to anyone's last words. There's nothing left for you to say, soon you'll be dead anyway." Lovely, really charming. I thought about this song when my last girlfriend left me. Hmm. 8/10
  3. Chump The bass and the drums do well on this song. The lyrics are blatantly obvious. "I don't know you, but I think I hate you. You're the reason for my misery." Ha ha. Now they're just pushing it. 8/10
  4. Longview The bass and drum intro on this is brilliant. The lyrics are good and this is a mellower song. Well, it's slower than the previous three. The lyrics mean something, but I can't work out what..... "I'm so damned bored I'm going blind!!!" Hmm. Hmm. 7/10
  5. Welcome To Paradise This is a great song to jump around to. An anthem in fact. They really get the harmonies to work here. 8/10
  6. Pulling Teeth This is a calmer song. Lots of backing vocals make this brilliant. It's about a girlfriend beating him up. "Is she ultra-violent? Is she disturbed? I better tell her I love her. Before she does it all over again. Oh God, she's killing me!!!" A really sad song. 8/10
  7. Basket Case Probably the best known song on the album. Fast, punk, clean and great lyrics about being paranoid, neurotic, creepy, and generally one cracked up guy in need of a shrink. Bloody brilliant. 9/10
  8. She Bass and drum intro again. The guitar never really gets loud on this song. Well, it does, but not as much as the others! I remember quoting this in an exam once. "Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you? Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?" 9/10
  9. Sassafras Roots Or maybe it should be known as Wasting Your Time. That's what everyone calls it. Catchy tune and great vocals. 8/10
  10. When I Come Around Another well known track. The guitar is less distorted and quieter. The lyrics are meaningful. But under this tune they don't have as heavy an effect. They are pleasant which makes the song more listenable to the un-Green-Day-Fan's ear. 9/10
  11. Coming Clean "I found out what it takes to be a man. Mom and Dad will never under stand, what's happening to me." Says it all really. A typical song in the style of the album. One thing about the album is that there are few solos on the guitar. Mainly because Billie Joe, Mike and Tre like to jump around a lot on stage. 8/10
  12. Emenius Sleepus Great song and great everything. Your basic Dookie song. 8/10
  13. In The End The lyrics are about a user of a girlfriend. I've been there. I've done it. It's my life. 8/10
  14. F.O.D WHAT?!? An acoustic guitar? No drums? Well, for 1 minute and 36 seconds there isn't. Then all hell breaks loose. Brilliant song. FOD is an abbreviation of F*ck Off and Die. Simple really. 9/10
  15. All By Myself (bonus track included on F.O.D.) After 4:10 on FOD this song comes in. Here are the lyrics. Sheer class. "I was alone. I was all by myself. No-one was looking. I was thinking of you. Oh yeah, did I mention. I was all by myself. All by myself. All by myself. I went to your house. But no-one was there. I went in your room. I was all by myself..You and me had. Such wonderful times. When I'm all by myself. All by myself." It's just Billie Joe and an acoustic finger style guitar. Everyone should know this song.
